Kobo Libra Colour & Kobo Clara Colour Buying Guide

KOBO · COLOR E INK HUB

Kobo Libra Colour & Kobo Clara Colour

Kobo has two true color E Ink readers — Libra Colour and Clara Colour — plus the monochrome Elipsa 2E, which is often mistaken for a color device. Here’s how they compare on size, launch date, case fit, and which accessories are worth adding.

The Elipsa 2E uses a monochrome Carta 1200 panel, not Kaleido 3 — it’s included here because it’s frequently searched alongside Kobo’s color readers, not because it displays color. Specs sourced from Kobo product listings; last checked July 2026.

CASE COMPATIBILITY

Which Kobo models share a case

Interchangeable

Clara Colour & Clara BW

Both share the same 112 × 160 × 9.2 mm shell and the same button/port layout, so their official SleepCovers and third-party sleeves are fully interchangeable.

Usually fits, not guaranteed

Libra Colour & Libra 2

The Libra Colour is nearly identical to the Libra 2, with only a slightly thicker grip edge. Most Libra 2 cases will physically fit, but for a guaranteed snug fit — especially with auto sleep/wake magnets aligned — stick to a Libra Colour-specific case.

Not compatible

Libra Colour & Clara Colour

Different screen sizes (7″ vs. 6″) and body dimensions mean these two never share a case, cover, or screen protector.

Not compatible

Elipsa 2E & either color model

At 10.3 inches, the Elipsa 2E is significantly larger than both color readers and uses its own dedicated SleepCover.

ACCESSORY BUYING GUIDE

What’s actually worth buying for each model

01

Official SleepCover

Kobo’s own SleepCover uses magnets tuned to each device’s sleep/wake sensor placement. Third-party folios work, but only Kobo’s covers guarantee reliable auto-wake.

02

Kobo Stylus 2 (Libra Colour only)

Not compatible with the Clara Colour, which has no stylus support at all. On the Libra Colour it unlocks color note-taking and in-book markup — genuinely worth the extra cost if you plan to annotate.

03

Matte screen protector

Adds writing friction for Libra Colour + Stylus 2 users and reduces glare on both color panels, though it does soften color saturation slightly — a fair trade for most readers.

04

Bluetooth headphones or speaker

Both Clara Colour and Libra Colour support Kobo Audiobooks over Bluetooth. Any standard pair works; there’s no proprietary pairing requirement.

05

Spare Kobo Stylus 2 tips

The nib wears down faster on Kobo’s smoother display coating than on Wacom-based competitors. Worth keeping a spare set if you write daily.

06

MicroSD card

Not applicable — neither Clara Colour nor Libra Colour has a card slot. Both rely on built-in storage (16GB and 32GB respectively) plus cloud access via Dropbox and Google Drive.

FAQ

Kobo color e-readers: common questions

Libra Colour or Clara Colour — which should I buy?

Libra Colour if you want page-turn buttons, a bigger screen, and stylus support. Clara Colour if you want the smallest, lightest, most affordable color Kobo and don’t need to write on it.

Is the Kobo Elipsa 2E actually a color e-reader?

No. It uses a monochrome Carta 1200 panel. It’s Kobo’s largest note-taking device, but it does not display color despite often appearing in the same buying guides as Libra Colour and Clara Colour.

Does the Kobo Stylus 2 work with the Clara Colour?

No. Stylus support is exclusive to the Libra Colour and Elipsa 2E in Kobo’s color-and-writing lineup; the Clara Colour has no stylus mode at all.

Can I use a Kobo Libra 2 case on my Libra Colour?

Physically, in most cases yes — the two devices are nearly identical in size. For guaranteed auto sleep/wake alignment, though, a Libra Colour-specific SleepCover is the safer buy.

Are Clara Colour and Clara BW cases interchangeable?

Yes. They share the same chassis and accessory mounting points, so SleepCovers and sleeves move freely between the two.

Which Kobo color device has the best battery life?

Kobo rates the Clara Colour at roughly 40 days and the Libra Colour at about the same, both based on 30 minutes of daily reading. In practice the larger Libra Colour battery (2050mAh vs. 1500–1900mAh) holds up better under heavier use.
