About Us — coloreink.com

We spend our reading time on color E Ink. That's the whole business.

Most tech sites cover color E Ink devices as one line item in a “best e-readers” roundup, somewhere between a dozen black-and-white Kindles. We do the opposite. Kindle Colorsoft, Kobo Libra Colour, Boox Go Color 7, the Kaleido 3 and Gallery 3 panels underneath them, and every case, stylus, and screen protector that actually fits these devices properly — that’s the entire site.

coloreink.com started in [YEAR] because [FOUNDER NAME] switched from a standard Kindle to a Kaleido 3 device and couldn’t find straight answers to basic questions: does color actually help with comics and manga, does it hurt battery life as much as people say, and which case protects the screen without adding bulk. The buying guides that existed were either written by people who’d never held the device, or were thin affiliate pages recycled from a template used for a dozen unrelated product categories.

We built this site to be the opposite of that.

What we actually do

  • We buy the devices. Every device we write about has been purchased or is on long-term loan from the manufacturer for testing — not a press photo and a spec sheet copied from Amazon.
  • We test the accessories on the device they’re sold for. A case listed for the Kobo Libra Colour is checked against the Libra Colour’s actual port placement, button layout, and auto-sleep magnet position — not assumed to fit because it fits a similarly-sized device.
  • We update when the hardware changes. Amazon, Kobo, and Boox update firmware and hardware revisions without much announcement. When a page goes stale, we re-test and update the publish date — we don’t leave it live with outdated specs.
  • We tell you when a device isn’t worth it. If a Signature Edition upgrade doesn’t add anything meaningful, we say that, even though it means recommending you spend less money.

Full detail on how we test is on our Testing Methodology page.

Why color E Ink, specifically

Color E Ink is a strange, fast-moving corner of consumer tech. The panel technology (Kaleido 3, Gallery 3, and whatever comes next) changes the calculus on almost everything — contrast, refresh speed, battery life, price — in ways that don’t map cleanly onto how people evaluate black-and-white readers or tablets. A general tech reviewer covering fifty product categories doesn’t have the reps in this one to know, for example, that a Kaleido 3 panel’s color saturation is genuinely useful for manga and cluttered magazine layouts but adds close to nothing for reading a plain-text novel.

We only cover this category, so we’ve handled enough of these devices back-to-back to know where they actually differ and where the marketing copy is overselling a real but marginal upgrade.

Who's behind this

We are an independent site and earn a commission on some purchases made through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. That relationship never determines which device wins a comparison — see our Methodology page for how we handle that separation.
