How we test color E Ink devices and accessories

This page exists so you don’t have to take our recommendations on faith. Here’s exactly what happens before a device or accessory earns a spot on coloreink.com, and where the limits of our testing are.

Devices

1. Acquisition Every device we review is either purchased at retail with our own funds or provided by the manufacturer as a review/loan unit. We note which applies at the top of each individual device review. A loan unit never changes the outcome of a review — see the “Editorial independence” section below.

2. Setup, as a normal buyer would experience it We set the device up out of the box with no special developer access or pre-configuration — the same onboarding flow, account linking, and library setup a first-time buyer would go through.

3. Testing window We use each device for a minimum of [14 days / your real number] before publishing a review, and longer for devices we plan to keep using as ongoing reference units. Screen quality, page-turn responsiveness, and battery drain all read differently after a week of normal use than they do in the first hour.

4. What we specifically check on every device

CategoryWhat we test
DisplayColor saturation and contrast under three lighting conditions (bright daylight, indoor lamp, dark room with frontlight only), refresh ghosting after 50+ page turns
BatteryReal-world battery drain over a week of mixed reading/note-taking use, not manufacturer-quoted “weeks of battery life” figures
EcosystemLibrary lending support (Libby/OverDrive where applicable), file format compatibility, app availability for Android-based devices
BuildPort placement, button layout, weight, and how these interact with the cases we test against it
Writing (where applicable)Latency, palm rejection, and handwriting-to-text accuracy for stylus-enabled devices

5. Comparisons When we compare two devices head-to-head (e.g., Kindle Colorsoft vs. Kobo Libra Colour), both units are tested side by side over the same window, using the same content where possible, so the comparison reflects contemporaneous testing rather than one device tested months before the other.

Accessories (cases, styluses, screen film)

1. Fit testing Every case is mounted on the specific device model it’s sold for and checked for port access, button access, auto-sleep magnet alignment, and camera/sensor cutouts (where relevant). A case that’s marketed as compatible with multiple devices is tested on each one separately — “compatible” on a listing page doesn’t always mean well-fitted in practice.

2. Durability check Cases are opened and closed a minimum of [50 / your real number] times to check hinge and magnetic closure wear, and carried in a bag for at least a week to check for interior lining shedding or dust intrusion around the screen cutout.

3. Stylus testing Third-party styluses are tested for pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, and latency against the manufacturer’s official stylus as a baseline, not against marketing claims alone.

How we score and rank

We don’t use a single blended star rating that hides tradeoffs. Instead, each review states plainly who a product is and isn’t a good fit for — for example, a device might be our top pick for library-book readers but explicitly not recommended for anyone prioritizing note-taking. Our comparison tables reflect that same logic: the “best” pick changes by use case, not just by spec sheet.

Editorial independence

coloreink.com participates in affiliate programs, including the Amazon Associates Program, and earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through links on this site. This does not cost you anything extra.

Affiliate relationships never determine:

  • Which product is named “best” or “editor’s choice” in a comparison
  • Whether a device or accessory receives a negative review or a “not recommended” call
  • The order products appear in a ranked list

Manufacturer review units are never returned in exchange for a specific rating, and we disclose in every device review whether the unit was purchased or provided.

When we update pages

Color E Ink hardware moves fast — new firmware, new hardware revisions, and price changes happen without much public announcement. We re-check pricing on a rolling basis and fully re-test device pages when a manufacturer ships a meaningful firmware or hardware update. Every page shows a “last updated” date; if a page hasn’t been touched in a long time and something’s changed, [email us / contact link] and we’ll prioritize it.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t publish “best of” lists for devices we haven’t personally used.
  • We don’t accept payment in exchange for a positive review or a specific ranking.
  • We don’t use stock manufacturer photography and present it as our own testing photos — images on our review pages are our own, taken during testing, unless captioned otherwise.
